favorite phrase of the day

He expected to find Laurel fast asleep. She sat, instead, straight-backed as the armchair she had pulled close to the rear window, her hands upturned on her lap. The light of the waning moon bathed the room silver-blue. Loath to disturb her, he placed the cups on the beside table and sat on the bed.

“I feel like I’ve been through nine different kinds of hell,” she said, her voice barely a whisper.

“Have you slept at all?” he asked.

She gave a short laugh. “With nightmares and beasts.”
